Anonymous tags a bad idea?

Topic started on 1-1-2006 @ 12:56 AM by AceOfBase

It seems some people are using the anonymity of the tagging sytem to make comments without it being attributed to them.

One thread on Israel has some unnecessary comments:
link

It was tagged with 'evil scum' and 'd8 bash israel or u r antisem'

If these tags were not anonymous it may discourage some people from putting tags like that on the threads.

We should probably abstain from doing such as much as possible, if not all the time, IMHO.

Not cool.

This is what SO had to say about that.

AceOfBase: on a website your never anonymous, especialy if the webmasters know what their doing.

On the outside things might seem to be represented as anonymous submissions, but in the backend its certainly logged who posted what and where.

if you ~PAY ATTENTION~...to what SkepticOverlord is 'ACTUALLY' saying there, you can figure out that TAGS are NOT ANNONYMOUS.......they KNOW who wrote what and when.
This is a big and busy site, they WILL go in and remove silly tagging, and the writers will then rue the day they THOUGHT tagging was annonymous......site kharma is gunna GETCHA.......

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

If you see a bad tag, simply use the gripe/suggestion function and it will be dealt with...

I understand that the tags are not really anonymous as far
as the mods are concerned. HOWEVER, I too feel that they
are not a positive addition to ATS. I am seeing MANY biased,
uneducated, and provocating tags on threads that reflect
bigotry and/or plain ol' ignorance.

Not that anyone cares but - I'd like to see them gone.

If 1,000 point penalties aren't enough to press the point and encourage responsible tagging, we can get serious.

As for the considerate posters looking for the tagging benefit, give it time. Tagging is the cutting edge in sort/search and it will pay off.

YEAH RANT!!! YOU GO FELLA!

Please excuse my ignorance on this ... is there a way
to report 'bad tags' or those that are unprofessional?

Just use the grip button? Or is there something else
we should be doing?

All there is to it. Or U2U a mod. I wouldn't mention them in threads because they'll be gone instantly and no need to reward troublemakers with attention.

If you read the thread on Aspertame and then click on a tag called aspertame it wil show you all threads with that tag.

It's useful if you see a subject you want more information on and it's better than using the search function if the tags are done right.

EDIT: or click on israel or lebanon on the thread I linked to.

I've seen a member add some useful tags to the bottom of their post.
I can see this type of thing being VERY useful for ATSNN threads, and well, any thread.
But, it can also add value to a specific post.

edited to add:
Not to mention it is waaaaaay faster than using the search function
