God and the EU

Topic started on 24-12-2006 @ 07:57 AM by infinite

Angela Merkel (German chancellor) insists that when Germany takes over the Presidency of the EU (January 2007), they will make direct reference to God in the European Union constitution and in the European Union as a whole.

Berlin will host a political declaration by EU leader on March 25 2007 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and its believed that there, the first direct link between God, Christian Europe and the European Union will begin.

I am all in favour of this. Europe holds a histroic place in the history of Christianity and we should not be keep it out of our history or the European Union.

Correction: Merkel EXPLAINED that she and her party HAD wished for a christian/god reference in the EU Charta and, possibly, the constitution. She did so during a press discussion on a Catholic congregation on the 25th of May, and the main focus of this discussion was the "Europe as a peace project".

The whole "christian" thing was only a tiny element of it. And certainly Merkel won´t try to use the german presidency as leverage to push this through, Merkel is no idiot.
