Another Schiavo medical drama

Baby Emilio

I know NOTHING about this story, except what I just read here.
My heart goes out to this poor family!! Such heartache!

Terry Schiavo was starved to death two years ago. She wasn't on life support - she was on a feeding tube that was removed. Now, her sister is faced with a similar situation - with her infant son.

As i said, I don't know anything about this case except that the article makes it sound like little Emilio is on a feeding tube and the medical facility wants to disconnect it. I have no idea about the condition of his brain, but it sounds like the medical facility said helping him was futile.

I don't know how the child got in this condition or how long he's been like this. It looks like Texas law gives people in this situation ten days to find a facility that will care for the child or they will unplug him.

no one can or SHOULD add their name to this petition or comment on the direction this case should take until we hear some more information, and some FACTS from some doctors on this child's condition. anything else is a fools move.

*SIGH* In issues like this I have to ask, who can speak for the patient? Would anyone who posts here actually want to exist depending on an artificial machine? While I can understand holding out hope against hope that a person's condition may change, there comes a point when someone has to step in and say, "Okay, we have to make a heart wrenching decision here."

Who can honestly say how this child or anyone for that matter in this condition feels?

do you have some type of info that was not released in the article? mind providing a link if so? no one knows what the child's 'condition' is, afaik.

Oh geeeze .. there is a petition attached to this? I missed it. Sorry ya'll.
Absolutely .. do not put your name down on anything.

I only saw the story part. I didn't see a link to any petition.
I'm looking for more information on the child and the situation.

I thought it was interesting because it is the Schiavo family again, in the same kind of situation. What are the odds?

The condition Emilio faces is Leigh's Disease, from what I had read.

What is Leigh's Disease?
Leigh's disease is a rare inherited neurometabolic disorder characterized by degeneration of the central nervous system. Leigh's disease can be caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA or by deficiencies of an enzyme called pyruvate dehydrogenase. Symptoms of Leigh's disease usually begin between the ages of 3 months to 2 years and progress rapidly. In most children, the first signs may be poor sucking ability and loss of head control and motor skills. These symptoms may be accompanied by loss of appetite, vomiting, irritability, continuous crying, and seizures. As the disorder progresses, symptoms may also include generalized weakness, lack of muscle tone, and episodes of lactic acidosis, which can lead to impairment of respiratory and kidney function. Heart problems may also occur. In rare cases, Leigh's disease can begin during late adolescence or early adulthood and progress more slowly.Source

I also read that most patients never make it past their mid-teens when they have already developed it as a baby. The outlook doesn't look to positive on Emilio's life, as he is already on a feeding tube at 17-months.

My question is, has the child been observed to possess motor skills by anyone other than the mother of the child? Legally speaking, at the moment with how the laws are written, the ten day law is allowed by Texas hospitals. More can be found out about the law here.
