Mohammed to be UK's Favorite Boy's Name

Topic started on 16-6-2007 @ 06:05 PM by Retseh

According to official government statistics, Mohammed will be the UK's most popular boy's name by year end.

www.breitbart.com...

Mohammed will likely become the most popular name for baby boys in Britain by the end of the year, The Times reported on Wednesday, citing government data.
Though official records from the Office for National Statistics list the spelling Mohammed 23rd in its yearly analysis of the top 3,000 names given to children, when all the different spellings of the name are taken into account, it ranks second, only behind Jack, according to The Times.

Nothing to worry about here, multiculturalism is a great thing isn't it.

Is that you, rdang?

Considering the number of people born in the UK last year numbered 127,000, that leaves 121,009 people who are not called Mohammed. Sounds like a pretty large number to me. I'd also suggest that your thread title is wrong - The Times has predicted this based on last year's trend, not the government. The Times is a right-wing tabloid. See where I'm going with this? That's right, it's yet another doom and gloom story to sell newspapers and make Mr. Murdoch that little bit richer. Congratulations on falling for it.

What's with the recent bought of anti-Britishness, Retseh? Have you managed to solve all the US's social issues so you decided to help us with ours? Thanks but no thanks - it's thinking like yours that make things worse, not better.

Says it all really.

Jack IS the most popular (my little bro is called Jack and I believe it has been quite popular for at least the past 15 years) and I wonder what the third most popular is.. Probably another "English" name. Oh look, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all "English" names:

Thomas was third with 5,921 names, with Joshua and Oliver rounding out the top five.

Slight distortion of the facts, methinks....

I wonder what would happen if it was Prophet? I reckon they should reserve that one as a girl’s name. Man and wife, truly blessed!! Or would they be stoned? Err… now where did I put that Koran… (Edit to avoid inciting religious hatred).

Alternatively you could read the full article here and the real significance of this statistical anomaly would become a little clearer.

The name Mohammed is often given as an "honorary prefix" to show respect and a true "given" name follows this. That is not to suggest that it is not a popular name but look at the full top ten, as stumason has already pointed out this is the only Muslim name in the top ten which perhaps indicates that there may be more danger of an Islamic lack of imagination rather than a cultural invasion.

Of course, what we really have to worry about is all of the Benjamins and Joshuas in the top ten - they're taking over I tell you.

At least the Josephs and Benjamin’s sound more culturally integrated than “Jesus” or “Christ”!!! It’s when they start taking over you really have to worry; otherwise it’s: Evangelical End Times “here we come”!! Till then it’s not a person’s name you have to worry about; just what’s inside them (or maybe inside their vest!!).
