Please know and understand that not all Americans agree with what is going on. Anyone that argues Rep. against Dem. obviously doesnt understand a two party system has no real choice, just the choice of perhaps the lesser of two evils. I love my country but Americans as a whole are easily mislead and many either depend on the government for their sustenance or their relatives do, so they support a broken system. This obviously isnt the whole problem, IMO the main problem is Americans are too busy doing drugs, watching tv and making porn videos of themselves so the net can see (disgusting) too worry about anyone else but them. It will change I hope, but not soon I worry.

this is intentionally somewhat off-topic...
i read something in here about needing to fill the tank of my SUV and tivo'ing my important shows like simple life and american idol.

just to address this, i do have a small SUV. excusing the past 10 months my job required that i haul equipment. we also visit family 600 miles away twice a year and need to be able to fit a family + luggage (i'm sure you can imagine why i refuse to fly.) i don't go joyriding just for shiggles, and if you're angry about the SUV, be happy i didn't buy a full size van. and as far as keeping the tank full, i put in 12 gallons once a week like clockwork. seems pretty modest to me - especially when i pull up to pumps that still show a $50 gas purchase from the previous customer.

simple life and american idol? really? i record science documentaries, various flavors of the star trek franchise, 4400, and a few others. yes, i'm a geek.

what a lot of europeans don't understand is that our public transit in a lot of places is effectively non-existent. we had a german exchange student stay with us for a year and he was surprised that we had to drive everywhere. things are too far apart to walk and there are no buses in most cases. for my line of work there is NOTHING within walking/biking distance. it's not a case of wanting that house in the suburbs - i live in an apartment about 20 miles from work. if i were to move close enough to my job to be able to walk i would seriously fear for the well-being of my family.

P.s - also Mcdonalds has started making our kids fat over here in the UK. That I don't agree with...

so stop letting your kids eat mcdonalds...

i'm playing this scenario in my head - imaging a guy sitting on his couch watching a news story about how fat americans are and making a fuss to his friends about those damn "fat yanks" while they're all munching on a quarter pounder and a biggie fry. LOL

/this was not meant to be an offensive post, i'm just trying to break some tension in this thread. i also wonder where the MODS are. this thread was flamebait when it started and some of the posts are pretty out of control.

The republicans impeached Clinton, not the people.

While some people were upset about his actions, many were not, me included.

clinton was a popular president.

I think that the republicans did this just so that in the case that one of theirs comes under fire, the impeachment process has been made a mockery of and useless so as not to be used. The very guy heading the impeachment proceedings was in the middle of an affair himself, as he recently revealed.
Hhhhmmmm, no prosecution by the republican party. With the focus on Bush right now, there really can't be anymore damage anyways.

Like I stated earlier, the impeachment process takes so long that by the time it is over, bush will be ready to leave the office anyways.

That being said, the other reason I think that Congress has not enacted it is because many of them voted for the war themselves. So it would not look good for them to impeach the president over a war they themselves voted in.

*sigh*

Anomaly,

I just wanted to add that these past few years, infuriatingly so, SUVs and trucks are on the rise.
BUT
last year the Toyota Prius-hybrid was the #1 sold car in the US.

So that says something.

Americans are waking up. Last week I went to the pet store and complained that a litter I like to use(because it is compostable) seemed to be going off market because I can't find it. He told me that it was because it was so popular.
He told me the environmentally friendly, organic pet products is flying off the shelves.

I started my own garden this year to have my own organic, and local, produce. I had a hard time finding some things because apparently, a lot of people had the same idea.
(my gardening success is another story, LOL) I hope others had better success.

Anywhoo,

As silly as it seems, Americans have a deep psychological connection with their cars. We love our cars and see our cars as an extension of ourselves like our clothes.
We built cars, cars helped get our country out of a serious economic depression, heck, many teens first times are in cars, a lot of kids were conceived in cars, many of us grew up taking road trips across the country.
There are just a lot of good feeligns involved, and a yugo doesn't say much. And typical Americans like bang for the buck. You can buy a little car for 30k. or you can buy a lot of car for 30k. People opt for the latter.

That being said,
now that environmentalism has been proven to be a real thing, it doesn't look geeky to drive a hybrid. It is mainstream now.

The tide is changing.

I have had to explain to Europeans many times that our public transportation is horrible. Some cities have it good like DC and New York, because they have to be. But putting public transportation in now would make most cities go broke, and we have to drive everywhere.

So if you are driving an SUV and complaining about gas, I don't feel sorry for you. but there are those of us who try our best and are feelign the pinch.

And a lot of people do depend on their vehicles for their livlihood.
Putting a focus on mom and pops instead of the big box stores will help.

BUt what EVERYONE doesn't get, especially Americans, is that the very close second for fuel consumption and pollution are the lawn mowers and simple engines.
Look at how many lawns there are. homes, offices, parks, everywhere. There really needs to be a curb on such a luxury and consuming habit.
But everyone focuses on the cars, and not the smaller machines.
And I am mentioning this to put a thougt in peoples heads that this is a big problem with little focus.

And the environmental problems and the political problems that Americans face are a little overwhelming, and a little more then a lot of people comprehend. I have heard many people say, i understand there is an environmental problem but I don't know what to do about it.
And I believe that it is the same for politics.People KNOW there is a problem, but what to do about exactly is the problem for them. We do what we know and that is to vote, rigged or not.

People think we should revolt and have an upheavel. Well then what?
How do you get 300 million people organized, overthrow a government and agree on choosing a new lot to run.

It doesn't exactly come with instructions.

And then we see things like on saturday where 200 people storm the capital and are instantly arrested.
As long as we comply, we are left alone.

So that is what we do, leave politics alone and hope that the next election is fruitful.

But theres nothing to be patriotic for you lot now, theres no American Dream anymore, It's really not that good of a place to live anymore.

I see.. so now that the US isnt as attractive as it used to be to foreigners and since they dont see it as their "Dream" anymore, then us US Citizens are supposed to stop being patriotic about OUR country.
That has to be one of the most closed minded comments that I've ever heard.
Thats like me saying.. France really sucks, their socialized medicine sucks and the citizens really suck, i dont see why anyone would want to live there..
How can French Citizens be so proud and patriotic, when your country just really... umm sucks?

Actually you can just put in a "___________" (blank) in the sentence where the country is listed and fill in whatever country you want..
England
France
Germany
Belgium
etc..
etc..

I'm going to (hopefully) make a valid point here, Branchly correlates to Iran on this thread, the sophomoric taunting, set up to rile folks and cause anger.

His posts are meaningless drivel however it does seek to inflame people, exactly what Iran is doing.

So far, I still have not figured out why Iran needs nuclear POWER ( not bombs, I'm putting that aside)

Did I miss a news report where Iran is now importing Oil for electricity?

it's a very nasty and messy way to make electricity, they would be better off with solar power, or wind power, why does it have to be Nuclear power if (as Iran has claimed) it's only for peaceful reasons.

I'm still surprised that the Mods have not slapped down branchly, but it does show how difficult it is to get rid of an Irritant ( like say "the shrub") I mean it's not like branchly has body guards or anything.

But I do see this thread as a reflection of the worlds problems, None of us have nuclear weapons yet we have a branchly in our midst, how do we solve that problem?

Hey man im all for ya, i came to America to escape a war in the Balkans. i have to say i am very gratefull that i am alive and well and America has taken me in. But i have done my research and although America has some very positive and world encouraging aspects...like the constitution, it still has a dark secret. CIA drug cartels, conspiracy's 9/11, assassinations, and corruption ( very much in the political system)...and if anyone speaks other wise, then they are a sad little person, because they are in denile that this great country is going down the sinkhole.

If these secrets that America has, and if people would realize the corruption and horror that is going on in Iraq. THen people could finally see that America is probably the ultimate terrorist, with a bunch of ignorant non believing people behind them to fund everything.

Please post a link to the proof you have of this. If you can't, then kindly stop your lying. Thanks.

Besides...even if the U.S. did do this (which they didn't), how does that justify islamic militants sawing someone's head off as not being evil? Your logic is flawed....as is the logic of most frothing at the mouth America haters.

Well, like someone said in a post above me. this thread is nothing but a huge flame war and as usual it is directed towards the US..
Im done arguing with these "people" and have sent this complaint
to the ATS mods..

"this thread has gotten out of hand, I cant believe that you mods have let it go this far considering that it started with a flame.
Threads like this only stir up discontent and it reduces
the respectability and credibility of ATS as a whole.
It needs to be locked and or discarded"

Patriotism is (Per dictionary.com)

devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty.

Patriotism is like having school pride.

Who really cares what school you go to. You are only there because that is where your parents/guardian decided you would attend.

I have heard many people in my family as well as others claim... "this is my country". it disgusts me to hear them say this. The only reason this is "your country" is because you were born here.

I believe people need to quit protecting and defending their government and start protecting and defending each other.

America must go, eh?
Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.

First of all, what do you think has prevented nuclear conflict so far? MAD, mutually assured destruction ( I guess it's necessary to spell it out). Only a fool or a suicidal maniac would start a nuclear conflict when ALL parties are guaranteed complete destruction. In my layman's opinion, Mr. Ahminamoodforjihad is most certainly a suicidal maniac. Letting Iran have nukes is basically the same as LAUNCHING them.

Whatever you think about the USA, this is certainly not the best point to differ on.

Who do you think is next in line for the lone superpower title? China, Russia, Global caliphate? The EU is maybe at the bottom of this short list. Who would you prefer?

Oh, but you see, that's where you're wrong, they're not ignorant at all, they're very smart, kniving, evil, and souless people.

You have to ask yourself what would make anyone hellbent on conquering the world? I mean they already have more money than they could spend in a hundred lifetimes. What makes them want to have sex with little boys? What makes them have to oppress?

Peace

Freedom isn't free my friends, it comes at a price. Once these "Crazies" so to speak are put to rest then we can move on to Operation Free Peace. But untill then there will never be free peace. We must understand that what's happening is not justified to the fullest, however had it not happened then you could throw your whole Justification system out the window. It is a dirty job, but someone has to do it, right? I leave the rest to you....

I think the problem with americans is that they are so brainwashed, and so ignorant of the situation, that they let their corrupted government do whatever they want. The worse is the media propaganda, it's everywhere, and they are very good at it! Just the other day, I was watching an american channel, and there was a navy publicity. The girl in the publicity said something about september being the month of prepareness for NY, she said how she was proud to serve a "greater" purpose, her country, and that since "terrosists attacked us in 9/11" and yada yada. I'm being horrible at describing it, but like all army publicity, it was very emotional, and it strikes a nerve, its a perfect publicity. It makes people believe their destiny is to serve for the navy/army and that they will be part of a greater purpose, the girl even subtilely talking about terrorists being the cause of 9/11. And that's just one publicity, of so many, and the key to brainwashing is repetition.

The author raised an interesting point. USA says they can attack Iran because they might have nuclear weapons. Yet the USA has tons of nuclear weapons themselves.

Yeah, it's high time America look inward. Withdraw ALL troops from Phillipine, Middle-east (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, you're on your own), South Korea, Japan, etc.

Let's just close our eyes and hope for world peace.

While we're at it, stop ALL monetary & medical support to Africa, S.E Asia, Europe.

If Rwanda happens, if Serbs decide to do another genocide, so be it. If N. Korea invade Japan and S. Korea, too bad.

If Russia treis to take a swipe at Europe, hey, who are we to say no?

i'm not brainwashed because i refuse to watch the news. (which will also draw criticism from most people.) i do check my google news daily but that gives perspectives from journals around the world. anyway, i would protest the government but i'd either end up in a camp or get tazer'ed to death.

It was meant as neither.

A lot of these guys in power have a closet full of skeletons, that's why they serve their masters so well, for fear of the closet door being opened up, plus they make a buttload of money to boot. They've sold their souls to the devil.

The U.S. has not threated to wipe Israel off the map either. Israel has nukes and they have not used them. Iran with nukes is like giving a 3 year old a loaded gun.
