Should politicians be more honest and accountable?

Topic started on 4-10-2007 @ 08:18 AM by proustian

I recently discovered that in the UK there isn't a law to prosecute politicians who are found to have knowingly deceived the public. In my opinion this amounts to a fundamental gap in the UK political system. Those who have been entrusted with the power of upholding a just political system have ensured that they are above it. Thoughts?

It's true, politicians are above the law, but sometimes, they get caught at to such a degree that they simply have to be prosecuted.

The biggest example of treachery, deceit and blatant lying is Bush. He's spread his lies to the four corners of the Earth and almost every one of them is false, guess work or lunacy.

My view on it is that if a politician is found out to be lying, he should be sacked. There's no excuse to lie to the public, we have every right to know whats going on.

I completely agree zanzibar. They should not only be sacked (politicians have no humility so sacking them will barely dent the surface) but should also be prosecuted. Did you hear about what happened in Hungary last year? A tape of the Hungarian PM making a private speech in which he admitted that his party had blatantly lied in order to win the election was made public - thousands of people rioted on the streets of Budapest calling for his resignation but he refused and is still PM! I wonder what would happen if a similar tape was made public (or any other kind of evidence) in the UK? Oh, there was the Downing Street Memo and f**k all happened.

Are you aware of The Ministry of Truth? I've been keeping up with their daily blog for a while now. They've got a documentary coming out on this very topic (pretty amusing blog at times!):

Nah, I like my politicians to be conniving and corrupt. If they can consistently fool the public, that means they are going to be an effective leader. That's why, here in the US we should all vote for Hillary Clinton..........

You 'recently discovered' this? How do you explain this thread, posted by you back in March, on exactly the same subject with a link to the exact same website with the exact same interview?

Methinks someone is trying to advertise their website/TV show.

No, because we would not vote for any of them. That is like a lawyer trying to fight his case while always telling the truth, it can't work.

Did anyone catch the "Ministry of Truth" doc? It was thought provoking and lucid. Now the creators of the "Ministry of Truth" are going to try to get the Elected Representatives (Prohibition of Deception) Bill passed through Parliament on Wednesday 17 October. Adam Price MP will be presenting the bill.

I've already emailed my MP asking him to support the bill, and it would be fantastic if you all could take a few minutes to send an email to your local MP - your MPs details can be found on the following website:

Please get involved, spread the word, and help make a difference!
