Australian Election - People Being Secretly Removed Off The Electoral Role!

Topic started on 17-10-2007 @ 07:29 PM by srsen

OK, there's about 5 to 6 weeks until Australia has a major election to vote in (HA!) it's new government and prime minister.

- Current prime minister, John Howard, is over 10 per cent behind in the polls.

- Voting is compulsory in Australia.

And well, i'm not too sure what to make of this, but as it stands right now

I have been deleted from the electoral role!!

I cannot explain it - i have voted in every election for the last 9 years and have never had a problem. But suddenly i dont exist, i will turn up on voting day and will not be allowed to vote!

- Is the current government nullifying those people's votes who won't vote them back in?

- Have I been targetted specifically as others who think in that ATS kinda way may also be?

- Will they attempt to fine me for not voting?

Please note that it is also officially too late to do anything about now. I realised at around 8:30pm last night - voting enrollment closed half an hour earlier.

I think this is significant - ARE THERE ANY OTHER AUSSIES ON ATS WHO HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE ROLL?? If so, what can we do about it? I for one dont want the government getting away with this - they are effectively hand-picking their voters!

EDIT: A work collegue of mine has also been removed from the electoral role. How many of us are there???

I will have a look into this. A friend of mine mentioned something about this but I was not exactly listening at the time

Did you change your address?
When I moved I re enrolled.

When the AEC receives information that a person is no longer living at their enrolled address, a notice is sent to the elector advising that their name will be removed if a satisfactory reply is not received. Each year approximately 2% of all electors are removed by this process. Other grounds for removing names from the roll are that the elector is not entitled on citizenship grounds. Any elector may lodge a ‘private objection’ if they consider that another elector is not entitled to enrolment. Information on the private objection process can be obtained from any AEC office.

Inquiry into the integrity of the electoral roll

I don't have time to pull out the legislation but I feel the reason must be due to you moving and being in a different electorate?

Seems to be an administrative issue:

It is understood up to 1000 of those removed in the ACT will turn up to the booths on November 24, only to find they incorrectly used an old form to apply for or to change their enrolment. Only 200 of about 1200 people who used the wrong forms have persisted and enrolled with the correct form.

"I might point out that while the AEC does everything in its power to facilitate enrolment, it is the elector's responsibility to be on the roll and maintain current enrolment information," he wrote in an October 10 letter.

143,000 voters knocked off roll

I feel if people have re enrolled and used the old form and it is not accepted then that isn't good at all.
