RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, aides said.

"The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred," Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan said.

A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in neck and chest as she got into her vehicle to leave the rally in Rawalpindi near the capital Islamabad. A gunman then blew himself up.

Wow, wonder who was behind it. Probably the guy in charge now.

Wossname, Pervez backed down from the election. Coward. He should have realised that to assassinate a second would be seen as unpatriotic and he could have been the hero. Whatever is said about Musharaff is that he was at worst complicit, not a perpetrator, and the perpetrators will manage to blame him if Pakistan does not hold it together and take the most stable way out of this.

Maybe the best we can hope for is for all candidates coming together for a (highly protected) photograph and agreeing to stand together in the spirit of cricket..... and have another awesome series with India afterwards. Tears lest we hope.
