This part here:

Serbia already has endorsed a secret "Action Plan" to be implemented if the province declares independence.

This is believed to include retaliatory steps to encourage Kosovo's 100,000-strong Serb minority, concentrated mostly in the north of the province, to formally keep their territories under Serbian control — a de facto partitioning of the province.

This will lead to Civil War. The Serbs and hopefully the Russians will have to come to aid of their comrades. The Albanians will most likely try to kill or ethnically cleanse the 100,000 Serbs in Kosovo.

For NATO to allow or encourage the Albanians in causing 100,000 people to become refugees or get killed is completely irresponsible. The EU needs to seriously rethink allowing or supporting this. It will lay the seeds for war with Russia either in this generation or a future generation.

I hope that don't happen. If it does,it will be another war to drain the U.S of thier resource.

I find it interesting that your main concern is the drain on the US economy that a conflict in Kosovo would cause, and not the conflict itself and the damage (it will cause) to a region already suffering (badly) from a previous war.

OP: I agree with you, this is a difficult situation that can certainly escalate into a conflict with Russia if NATO and the EU continue to push for independance. It will be far worse if NATO puts boots down in Kosovo in order to "secure" independance. Such involvement would certainly inflame this already drastic situation.

People only see conflicts on how it effects them. A war in Kosovo will hit the American Citizen's wallet. At a bad time too. Its like the problems in Darfur, people only see it as a war that we can nnot afford, not as an end to atrocities in the region.

Some updates to the developing crisis:

Serbia and Russia step up Kosovo warnings

BELGRADE (AFP) — Serbia and Russia stepped up warnings on Thursday that they would not accept the independence of Kosovo ahead of a UN Security Council emergency meeting on the breakaway province.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his support for Serbia, stressing that any "unilateral declaration of independence would be immoral and illegal."

In a four-page document, the Serbian government said it had also decided to proclaim as "null and void all decisions by the European Union to send a mission to Kosovo.

"These decisions have no legal foundation for Serbia and produce no obligation of Serbia towards the European Union," it read.

The United States and most members of the European Union have said they will recognise a declaration of independence by Kosovo, a mountainous province of some two million people which Serbs consider their historic heartland.

Serbia has been backed by several EU members such as Cyprus and Slovakia, as well as Russia.

Belgrade has already devised an "action plan" for measures to take once Kosovo proclaims independence, but its content has been declared a state secret.

Retaliatory measures reportedly include the possibility of Serbia breaking off diplomatic relations with countries that recognise Kosovo's independence, including the United States.

A government source said the most severe retaliatory measures would "almost certainly be taken against the United States" as it had been the strongest advocate for Kosovo's independence.

and then this;

Kostunica tells Serbia: brace for Kosovo secession
www.reuters.com...

BELGRADE, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica went on national television on Thursday to tell Serbia to brace for the imminent secession of Kosovo province, which their government would never accept.

This is quite scary where this is heading. Russia and the US seemed to be determined to clash and Europe will be caught in the middle of it.

I think the US should stay out of this conflict, and let the EU handle it.

In My Opinion, the EU shouldnt be involved in this either. This is an internal Serbian matter, that has escalated to an international incident because of outside interest groups

And as the OP pointed out with the update, the situation seems to be getting worse by the day. Things are definately heating up...

Two major powers are flexing muscles and Europe is again a battlefield.

But I honestly don't understand one thing. KFOR-NATO forces are there to ensure security in this province. Their main role there is to protect Serbian "minority" from Albanian majority. Now, if Kosovo Albanians are such nice and democratic people who love everybody, why KFOR forces? I mean, Kosovo Serbs cannot leave their enclaver without military escort.

Not to mention blatant breach of UN resolution 1244.
