Pop-ups???

Both at home and at work I get pop-ups now on ATS. The blockers won't stop them either? I get maybe one every 10th page I open. ATS is the only place my blockers are not working all of the sudden.

But hey, don't woory about it, I'm sure your pc can handle all the pop ups and all the trojan viruses from porno sites...the list goes on.

Yeah, there's some clever scripting out there sometimes.

A question: Are we supposed to report the occasional pop-up ad, for the 'hit list', or are they an intentional part of the site's advertising? If they're intentional, I'd suspect they would be a lot more of them.

nope, ATS doesn't allow pop ups and the answer to the pop up question can be found in the link mentioned above

Perhaps I'm just being thick, but I've read SO's posts in that thread three times now, and can't see how he addressed the issue of pop-up ads in a separate window. There was mention of a user getting popups + a virus that he was (of course) concerned about, but the other topic of that thread was redirector ads, that don't open a separate window, but rather forward the current page. Am I missing something?

But thank you Crakeur for clearly answering my question; in the future if I find those ads (popups in a separate window) I'll dissect the browser cache and inform the admins appropriately.

Download and install Vundofix, and run some other baddie removal tools, it is def not this website doing it.

as SO said, sometimes they do get thru to the site so, by all means, do let us know about them but the majority of the ones people mention are not from this site.

I got my first ATS pop-up ad ever yesterday. However, I was sick as a dog so I was browsing while not logged in. That most likely had a hand in it. I simply closed it and moved along. No worries.

That information allowed me to narrow down the culprit to Advertising.com. It appears as though their banners are popping the survey thing without our permission. I've disabled all their ads from running on ATS until this is resolved.

Advertising.com has indeed admitted to serving pop-ups through their normal banner tags appearing on ATS. This appears to be the long-standing culprit of the survey pop-ups that people have been getting from time to time.

We're not running any advertising from them until they can guarantee that this will stop.

Thank you. They have tapered off. I have not seen one today.

I don't mind ads at all, it's the redirection or unexpected ones when I'm in the middle of reading something.

Why is it the blockers don't work on them. That has only happened to me here and on the weather channel site. I don't visit many sites though to be honest, so they may be common. I mostly go to boards specific to software I use and news related stuff.

I don't know how to get the other info you might need. If you could explain how to get it I could be more helpful.

The fourth page I went to today it redirected to the above. No pop-up. Just went to this page instead of the thread. It did a countdown, but never returned to the page. Instead a go back button replaced the countdown and it would not work. It instead took you to the consumer survey site.

Here's some basic instructions, if you're using Firefox:

1. As soon as you get a 'bad' ad appearing, go to the address bar of an already-open browser window (don't open a new window, unless you have your browser set to go to a blank page on startup).

2. Type "about:cache?device=disk" in the address bar. This will list the contents of your local browser cache.

3. Search for the hour:minute, in 24hr time, when the ad appeared. Eg, if it happened at 2:30pm, type Ctrl+F and search for '14:30'.

4. Find the cache entry that starts with ' http://adserver.abovetopsecret.com/adlog.php' , with the latest 'Last modified' time, and include that entire line along with your description of the ad.


This is just my guess on what info might be useful; if there's anything else that would be helpful let us know!
